Brevard County, Florida – An Orlando man was arrested for human trafficking and other drug-related offenses after allegedly forcing two women into prostitution on New Year’s Day.
Miratel Capitaine met the women in Deland and Orlando and took them to West Melbourne where one of the women booked a hotel room at a Hampton Inn. Once there, he told them his plan to sexually exploit them and threatened to kill them if they didn’t go along with it.
Capitaine posted ads for the women on Backpage.com using his mobile phone and coached them how to talk to men who called to set up “dates” with them. He used drugs to keep his victims awake through the night in order to exploit them with more buyers.
One of the victims told police she was sexually exploited by three or four men at the hotel and Capitaine took all the money. He also ordered a pizza but refused to feed one of the women.
Starving, scared, and traumatized, one of the victims asked Capitaine to go out for a smoke while he was nodding off to sleep. Once outside, she spotted a patrol car driving by. She ran towards the car and screamed to the officer for help. Authorities responded quickly by rescuing the women and arresting Capitaine.
Authorities found cocaine, heroin, Xanex and other drugs hidden in a mattress in the hotel room. Investigators believe these were used to keep the women compliant and awake.
Capitaine is being held without bond and also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Orange County. He is charged with using coercion for commercial sex activity of an adult, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of cocaine and possession of a controlled substance.
The case is still under investigation.
