Child Pornography Sting

This week, 11 men were arrested in Polk County. They face a combined total of 660 felony charges for child pornography.

This is just one of many stings carried out in Polk County to protect our children. Across the nation and world, our children are being used and abused. We are grateful to our partners in law enforcement who work diligently to keep our kids safe!

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said, “Most of the images we saw during this investigation depicted children being sexually battered.”

The reality of his comments should shock us. However, the demand for this kind of pornography is no longer a surprise. This is just another story of men treating people as objects for their pleasure.

The over-sexualized culture in America fuels the fire of violence against women and children.

In many cases, naive young people send pictures of themselves to strangers. This was the case with Rickie Vargas-Garcia, 30, of Davenport, who works as a Lego builder for Legoland. Police found files depicting child pornography involving victims ages 3 to 5 in his possession. He told deputies he pretended to be 18 and met underage girls online, convincing them to send pornographic pictures. Vargas-Garcia faces 10 counts of child pornography.

Sherrif Judd added, “Every time one of these photographs are shared, the child is re-victimized.”

In addition to the Lego builder, Disney employee Roger Catey was arrested on 24 counts of child possession and two counts of promotion of sexual performance by a child. Catey was promptly fired upon news of his arrest.

Also among those arrested were also a teenager, a Boy Scout volunteer, and a former teacher.

As long as pornography and sexualized images are accepted in our society, women and children will be exploited.

Let’s look at some facts:

  • Every 98 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted in America.
  • On average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States.
  • 1 in 6 women in America has been the victim of a completed or attempted rape.

People are not objects to be used for another’s pleasure. We are made with inherent value with hopes and dreams. No child ever dreams of working in prostitution or pornography. No parent wants that life for their child.
