Marnie grew up in Canada and was unaware of how prevalent human trafficking was until she moved to Orlando. She learned how wide-spread and devastating it was while volunteering with Jane Shugart. Jane and Marnie knew they wanted to do something to help. What began as a one-time backpack drive in 2014 has continued due to the overwhelming demand from both victim advocates and law enforcement agencies in need of urgent needs for victims.
The rescue backpack program is unique in that it serves multiple purposes. Victims receive items they need, packing events provide an avenue for spreading awareness, and it is a practical way for people to participate in the fight against human trafficking. In 2019 Jane and Marnie formally merged with Florida Abolitionist to share resources to help the program grow to make a bigger impact in assisting victims of human trafficking. Marnie is passionate about this cause and wants to do all she can to help spread awareness.
